The Wines

100% Chardonnay (1989-90) from lime-limestone soils 40 cm above the mother rock, fears drought, 3-4 year 228-litre oak cask fermented, raised 12 months malo completed, no added SO2, “my best Chardonnay”, made every other year

2016-17 ()

yes, the label reads 16-17: opaque yellow colour. There’s a floating grace on the nose, honey, crushed peach, a wee note of exotic fruits. The palate bears a southern-fuelled gras richness at heart, savoury notes, with a firm, iron moment near the finish, real spine late on. It’s very decisive after the early pleasure. “My 2016 was very ripe – I let it ripen too much because of the hail. 2017 was deliberately a bit underripe. So raising here was the 2016 12 months in oak, then 12 months in vat, the 2017 12 months in oak cask, with 60% 2016, 40% 2017,” Sylvain Bock. 13.5°. 2023-24 May 2019
