The Wines

50% Merlot (1970-72), 50% Syrah (1965, 1990) from sand with clay soils at Sarrians, separate vat fermented, destemmed, only wild yeasts, 2-week vinification, daily pumping overs, 1-2 part vat emptying/refillings, assembled in March, concrete vat raised 12-18 months, unfined, unfiltered, 10-13,000 b

(vat, bottling Sept 2018) full red robe. There is reduction in a meaty bouquet, bulls blood here, dark red fruits such as mulberry at its centre. This is a real rocker, very 2016. It bears a generous roll of spiced, gourmand plum fruit, while tasty, quite thick tannins line its late moments. This is a screaming BUY. It goes fully to the finish. The tannins need 18 months, but really contribute an extra couch. There are clove notes, bell pepper through the palate. This is remarkable at that tiny price of €4.50. From late 2019. 2025-26 March 2018

deep plum colour; beef stock, pepperiness, a nudge of musky flowers on the nose. This is good-hearted wine, very genuine, has teal good reach. Its core is full and there’s lots of thick fruit and density for your stews, readers. There is a crunch of tannic assertion on the close. This is a STEAL at €4.50. “It’s honest,” Guy Ricard. 14°. 12,000 b. To 2022 March 2018

pretty complete red robe. The nose is nicely savoury, has a mulled red fruits aroma, plums: it’s a good start, a little rose hip. This gives attractive drinking – it can drink solo, has lovely flesh, roundness. It is almost plump, Pinot-like. There is a raspberry-plum combination with fine tannin here. It is very much centred around the age of its vines, with the yield under 50 hl/ha. A thread of pepper runs through the second half. Drink with lamb, grills, sauced meats, stews. At €4.90, it is VALUE. To 2020 July 2016

steady red, sound heart. There is a ready spice influence on the nose, with prune, black fruits, coffee, clove and raspberry airs – it is just ceding some tightness now. The palate is sprinkled liberally with pepper; its black fruit has fresh lines, more towards steel than jam. It ends firmly, in the house style. Better from late 2013. 13°. To 2018  Oct 2012

dark plum red; smoky, cassis jam air, light dustiness and a liberated raspberry fruit aroma. The palate is enclosed on the start, has firm sides, a rather square shape. A serious wine for la table and some evolution, not immediate. There are oily moments late on. A stern-faced wine that is easing gradually, decant it. The finish shows pepper and dust. Grilled foods suited. 13°. To 2017  Oct 2012

steady, quite bright red colour; the nose is rather closed – has an undertone of smoky cassis, and can widen in time. The palate sets off with peppery, live black fruit, it broadens in mid to late-palate and ends roundly. Very drinkable – nice and clear, and good on its own. Contained Côtes du Rhône this year. 13°. “The Merlot helps to contribute some delicate fruit, this is bien honest comme vin,” G.Ricard. Jan 2008
