The Wines

100% Syrah from Mercurol, destemmed, 15% new, 15-30% 1-5 year oak casks, 50-70% steel vat 6 months, unfined, unfiltered, 12-15,000 b

(vat) quite dark; varnish front air, clipped blackcurrant fruit behind: the nose is stiff, clinical, at present. The palate is similar, based on tight, near taut fruit. It finishes with juice clad in oak (30%, 15% new). A Crozes aimed at la table and drinking after the first flush of youth. The finish shows gras and oak. From mid 2016. 2021-22  Jan 2015

2011 ()

shiny red; has a simmered red fruits air – more mulled in style than clear-cut, has a vegetal note. The red fruit is perfumed, with fine tannin and a light nutty note. A bit basic. Fair length. There is some burn on the finish. Drink soon. Bottled Jan 2013. 12,000 b this year. To 2016  Oct 2012

2010 ()

rich, rather oily air, with a note of reduction, licorice, dust, spice in back; it is starting to evolve and advance with a jam-like softness. The palate bears tight black fruit, spice resurfaces, and there is a grainy late moment. Pretty fresh, a shade plain, a big scale product. To 2016. May 2012

2009 ()

fair red robe; has a smoky, nicely tarry first air, shows blackberry and hedge fruit berry aromas, oaking. The palate is rather firm overall. A steady line of tannin runs through it. The finish is toasted-tarred – it lacks fruit there, although there is fruit at its mid-point. Has evident tannins. 13°. To 2016  Oct 2012

2006 ()

quite a dark robe; wide, spiced red fruits aroma – there is oak inside, and suggests a wine that is structured to evolve rather than just dash off its fruit; the oak brings smokiness – altogether it is quite traditional, since the oak is not overly intrusive. Berry flavour, jam on the premises – this rather a handsome wine. The black fruits continue steadily, and it ends on a clear note. A wine that is wide, secure, the oak well-worked – it offers a firm handshake. Touch of olive and the south on the finish. Leave until late 2008 for its oak to absorb. 13°. 2013-14 Dec 2007
