The Wines

70% Grenache (1970s-1980s), 30% Syrah (mid-1990s) from a 2.5 hectare stony red clay alluvion vineyard, destemmed, varieties fermented apart, 3 week vinification, daily pumping overs, part vat emptying/refilling, aged 30% 1-2 year 228-litre oak casks, 70% large barrel 12 months, filtered

mainly dark red; the bouquet has some Southern charge, mixes herbes de Provence with red cherry, a light rose-style fragrance. The palate is fluid, geared into small red fruits, redcurrants, delivers white pepper, clear notes towards the close. It’s still in an early, slightly fibrous state, but can take on more gras as it evolves. From 2022-23, with progress on the agenda. €15 at cellars. 2041-43 Feb 2020

2017 ()

dark, black-tinted robe; a blackberry fruit aroma with a floral-violet implication leads the nose, along with a vegetal side. The palate shows cut, clarity, lacks a little stuffing to lay a foundation below its black fruit. It ends on cool notes, slightly chalky tannins. Lack of ripe body here. From mid-2020. 2030-32 Oct 2018

dark red robe. There is an air of sweet cassis, blackcurrant fruit, with smoke and licorice. It’s well together, a good ensemble. The palate bears streamlined black stone fruits with a crisp tang from the tannins as it ends. The length is secure. A solid, rather dark Gigondas with enough body to accompany red meats. From mid-2017. 2025-26 Feb 2017

(casks/barrel) light to medium purple-garnet colour. Red fruit aroma on the nose with a definite plum, kirsch accent. Has a sweet attack, then a fruity mid-palate. Its tannins are firmly forward on the finish. A more immediate style of Gigondas. 13.5°. From spring 2015. 2020-21 JL Dec 2014

2012 ()

(casks/barrel) shiny robe, a full dark red and purple. Smoky bacon, iris flowers air with soupy black fruit present. The palate fruit could be more “up”, live – it has a pedestrian, static nature. It coats the second half of the palate. There are no little nooks and crannies to stimulate the drinker, is plain wine. From mid-2015. 14°. €15.30 at the cellars. 2019-20  Dec 2013

dark red, some black tints. Blackberry-prune, black fruit jam or jelly aromas – the nose has a smiling purity. Soft black fruit start to the palate; this is constant in its fleshy, approachable flavouring, gives a simply fruited appeal, with soft tannins inside it. It gains depth and chewiness on the finish. Fine Gigondas, not muscular. From late 2013. 2026-28  Dec 2011

2004 ()

fairly dark red; plum fruited, strawberry aroma – the bouquet is wide, quite deep. At first this has a smooth texture, the fruit clear, but it develops a bitter point towards the end. The depth is refined, and there is a little potential. Try from spring 2008. 2013-14  Dec 2006

2003 ()

sappy, sweet-toned nose with light animal, earthy airs, is a little baked as per the vintage. Dry-toned palate that has white pepper edging; the fruits are red stone. Respectable length. More open and loose from 2007. 2012-13  July 2005

sound depth on the nose – red fruit with floral appeal. Well-worked red fruit leads the palate – it is clean, and has a white pepper surround. A wine that is in good form now, led by its Grenache of an authentic nature. The elegant style of Gigondas, quite traditional, and nicely loose at this stage. Length is good. 2011-13  July 2005
