Syrah (60% 2006 40% early 1980s) from granite, gore soils at Colombier-le-Vieux, Arlebosc, Empurany, whole bunch fermentation, long maceration at low temperature, 60-70% vat, 30-40% 5-20 year 228-litre oak cask raised on fine lees 7 months, unfined, unfiltered, under 25 mg/litre sulphur dioxide applied 3-4 weeks before bottling, Vin de Pays de l’Ardèche until mid-2010s, 10,000 b

2019 ()

(vat/casks, bottling May 2020) quite a dark red; the nose is peppery, on red berries, strawberry coulis, has space to express itself. The palate holds perfumato notes, red cherry-raspberry, slight reserve, tannin on board from half way. It tones down on the finish. From 2021 ideally. 2025-26 Feb 2020


(vat/casks, bottling May 2019) red robe. Elderberry, blackberry, neat black pastille appeal on the nose, a backdrop of beef stock adding dimension. The palate gives bright black berry-violet fruit, in the instant, will please unconditionally. It continues with a pure thread, finesse in the late juice. This performs as well as ever. 2022-23 Feb 2019


(vat, bottling May 2012) live, clear purple. Has a blackberry, jam fruit top air, a leaning towards “high” fruit, a note of lees, some baked bread also. Racy blackberry fruit leads the palate, has a true blackberry flavour and runs freely with that. There is a small late pocket of acidity. A bracing sort of palate that charges on, without great depth. It is unkempt now, will be more together from 2013. 2017-18 March 2012


(fibre glass vat) strong violet in the purple robe. Pepper and spice airs, with a saline note, live spice is main impression from the bouquet, with a bit of game in the background. The palate is direct, crisp and crackling. There is a mineral thread through it, a red fruit that represents “snap your fingers” time. 11.8°-12°. To 2014-15. Nov 2010


comfortably full red colour; the nose is harmonious – the first air is lightly grilled, nutty, with fine red fruit behind, some salty notes. The palate is spicy, peppery; its middle area is especially good and live - and it ends on that drive. Has excellent tannins – they spread extremely well. It starts with discreet cherry fruit, but its acceleration along the palate is really good. w.o.w. wine with a great finish. Very good value at €8 hors taxe. 2016-18 Nov 2010


this isn’t at all 2003 in style: one sense a long, cool maceration at low temperature, since the it holds darting black fruit that is clear, sustained, has good acidity. There is black berry fruit aroma, and the content is solid. Good shape and length. 12°. Very well worked. Vin de pays with the Sainte Epine name on the label, so I think this was declassified following a rumpus with the authorities. Oct 2007, Copenhagen
