2016

(cask) dark and shiny robe. The nose is inky, has a subdued depth of smoky black fruits piled high, a touch of sweet oak behind. The palate bears stubby black fruits, holds a butty, compact content with a sound heart; its juice is concentrated, taken straight off the granite in its knit, mineral manner. The finish involves plum fruits, oaking, some still smoky, assertive, rocky tannins. There is plenty here, has the southern sector of St Jo styling, an authentic capture of that inside its oak. This has a stylish, still quiet nose, so it’s all about potential, showing for now an aroma of black berry fruit, some tea leaves. It’s nicely wide. This travels well with fluent and fluid dark berry fruit, blackberry jam in the flavour, and ripe tannins that also have nerve in them. The ensemble here will please, and its fluid core works well. There are aromatic dabs on the aftertaste. The balance is good. 2015 ()

(casks) dark robe. Blackberry fruit traverses the nose which shows reduction, has an inner fat, damp soil, grilling present. The attack is also grilled, with bouncy dark berry fruit, lithe tannins. This is backward for a 2015. The nose is broad, the palate fully charged. It washes long and across on the finish – it gives thick juice there. The close is ripe and round. 2014

(casks) dark red colour. Has a brewed, smoked, charcoal oak first aroma, a pretty large scale bouquet. The palate holds ample mass of content, has been pumped up, and its oak is still on the wild side, on the outside. 2013

(casks) a complete dark robe here. Has a broth-like, earthy bouquet: reduction means this must be decanted. The nose has a black jam centre. The palate is stiff from its oaking, which gives also a flavour of varnish next to the granular black fruit. There is granite wine ping on this, the mineral cut. It is like a knuckle rather than an open hand presently. An authentic note of late violets provides lift. I like its inner tenacity. Take your time. From spring 2017. 2025-27  Jan 2015

2012 ()

(casks) dark. The oak is still strident, but inside the bouquet is an air of sleek black cherry fruit which is still planted in its raising stage. There are hints of southern ripeness such as dates. This holds discreet, rather stylish gras richness, and expands gradually across the palate late on. Interesting possibilities. A grown-up Saint-Joseph. Holds dark fruits with lots of juice inside the palate. From 2016. 2013-25  Nov 2013

2011 ()

(casks) good, full, dark robe. Oaked, nutty dark fruit aroma – the bouquet is still upright and very primary. There is a cool black cherry air within. The fruit inside the oak is clear, crisp, fluid. The oak needs 18 months to integrate more – it prevails on the late stages now. Modern style wine, orderly and oaked. Given the refinement of the vintage, less oak would have helped. The black cherry fruit runs to the finish. Decant this. From mid-2014. 2019-21  Nov 2012
