The Wines

100% Syrah (1958, 1978) from partly stony clay-limestone soils, cool pre-fermentation maceration, vinification over 4 weeks by maceration carbonique, wild yeasts, concrete vat raised 19 months, unfined, unfiltered, no added SO2, 10,000 b

red robe with a clear rim; has a brambly berry fruit air, raspberry, cassis, a hint of peony flowers, strawberry jam. There’s stylish filling in the bouquet. The palate is fresh, expressive immediately, has real good zap, with a tasty flourish, strawberry and rose influences in harmony. It has a squeezy middle, then a clear finale. There is a bit more complexity and nuance than on the Grenache Briand 2015. A touch of reduction is present – “it wasn’t here six months ago; this will live at least another 10 years,” Gérald Oustric – if it’s well stored. There is good fibre and attractive length here. 12°. Bottled June 2017. 2029-31 May 2019
