The Wines

80-90% Grenache, 8-15% Syrah, 2-5% Mourvèdre from sandy soils on Les Bédines (N-E), destemmed, 25-30 day concrete vat vinification, pumping overs, part vat emptying/refilling, concrete vat raised 6-7 months, 4,500-5,000 b

handsome dark red robe; the bouquet has a top air of iodine, seashore, with blackberry fruit of some style present. It’s a calm, well ordered opening, with more to come. The palate runs with suave feel black fruits such as cassis, extends with a sure hand, builds a little depth from within towards the finish. It’s a stylish, well arranged Châteauneuf. The tannins are trim, powdered, and will benefit from being left for a couple of years, decanting an option. 15.5°. 5,000 b. 90% Gren, 8% Syr, 2% Mourv. Bottled July 2020. €26. From mid-2022. 2036-38 Dec 2020

2018 ()

plum red colour; loose, spiced bouquet, hints of briar, plum stones. It has a cool tenor. The palate is springy, crisp, not as yet together. The tannins have a bit of the screeching tyre in them, are a little edgy, but can soften. There could be more mid-palate richness. 15.5°. 5,000 b. 90% Gren. 8% Syr, 2% Mourv. €26. Bottled July 2019. From mid-2021. 2035-37 Oct 2019

full, complete red robe. The bouquet is reserved, shows a note of kirsch, cherry stone fruit, raspberry, the fruit well defined. The palate is solid, thorough, has presence via its good, unbroken run of red-fruited content. The tannins add a nicely firm, toffee-style couch towards the close. This fills the glass well, is still under wraps post bottling, with the aftertaste revealing a little note of power. Decanting necessary. 15.5°. 5,000 b. 90% Gren, 8% Syr, 2% Mourv. From 2020. 2037-39 Oct 2018

2016 ()

shiny, pretty full red robe, legs visible. The nose is sweetly fruited, revolves around strawberries, good quality strawberries in jam-liqueur form; it also shows some dried herbs. The palate is rich, fluid, drinks with a suave content and wavy layers of red berry fruit stemming from its high Grenache content. It’s a full wine more for sipping than free drinking. 15.5°. 5,000 b. 90% Gren, 8% Syr, 2% Mourv. From late 2018. €24.80. Bottled July 2017, a bit early, I reckon. 2032-35 Oct 2017

decent red robe. The nose has an air of blackberry jelly, is soft, juvenile, pretty open already; there is a touch of herbes de Provence. The palate is threaded with spice, white pepper that wraps around its easy flow of raspberry fruit. A little knot of tannin appears on the finish. It’s a low-key Châteauneuf, already bottled, workmanlike, though there are some local statements. 15°. From spring 2017. 2028-30 Sept 2016

2014 ()

clear quite dark red colour. The nose shows reduction, and probable post bottling murk; the fruit is stewed more than crisp, a little fuzzy. There is some ripeness in it. The palate holds red stone with a dart of tannin towards the finish, a small note of raspberry on the aftertaste. This doesn’t hit the heights of the 2014 vintage, is rather plain and workmanlike. 15°. 90% Gren, 8% Syr, 2% Mourv. 5,000 b. €24.80. Bottled July 2015. From mid-2016. 2024-25  Oct 2015

2013 ()

medium red colour. The nose is reductive and sweaty. There is the same sensation on the palate, a wet dog nuance. The fruit on the palate is sweet, round and supple. Is there a touch of herbaceousness lingering here? Its tannins are dry and edgy on the finish. Bottled already. 15°. From 2016. 2022-23 JL Oct 2014

2012 ()

medium depth red; has an air of red cherry, a nose that draws in some power, width, comes with a licorice note and a low-key depth. The palate is compact, not yet extending. Has a small core of red fruit with gummy, stable tannins in support. This has been made in supple fashion with a bit of local strength showing late on. Not arresting, an early drinking wine which is a bit top heavy on its power. From 2015. 15.5°. Bottled extremely early, May 2013. €24.15. 2021-22  Nov 2013
