The Wines

100% Grenache (1950s-1960s) from sandy schist soils at Courthézon, destemmed, 2-3 week vinification, pumping overs, concrete vat raised 6-8 months, unfined, filtered, organic wine

mostly dark red colour; the bouquet offers blackberry fruit with low-key floral elegance, a jelly-like sweetness on board, an air of varnish. The palate has a grilled angle to it, centres on plum fruit with a note of varnish, the tannins a little dry. The finish is sturdy, not yet softened. It will pay to wait a while, another six months, and pair it with red meats. 14.5°. From late-2021. 2026-27 Apr 2021

dark red robe. Plum fruit and blackberries combine on the nose, licorice and a little dark spice. It reveals garrigue, local attributes, herbs. The palate content is compressed, and isn’t yet on an open stage. There is spicing, a flavour of prunes, some still grippy tannins. It has the structure to evolve into a second stage, and is a table wine with local grounding, a sense of place. The finish is still firm. The aftertaste is spicy. Good with lamb. 14°. Grenache plum red fruit colour. Sweetly spiced nose, with stewed red fruits, a hint of jam and some black raisin, grapey aspects, a note of toffee and also dusty trails. The palate is also grapey, with a smoky second half. It’s rather a game of two halves – the attack on nicely thick strawberry jam, then more ping, smoky cut. This is interesting, has its own non-mainstream character. It will be great with lamb in rosemary, lamb cutlets, veal. It ends well, running and full of life, the aftertaste spiced. 13.5°.
