mid-1980s Syrah, destemmed, wild yeasts, 12-17 day vinification, pumping overs open to air until 1030-1040 specific gravity, then closed pumping overs, aged 60% new-1-2-3 year 228-litre oak casks (11% new), 40% 1-23 year 600-litre oak casks 20-22 months, fined, unfiltered, 10,000 b

dark, shiny red robe. Blackberry fruit aroma comes with a vegetal air, iron filings – the nose isn’t ensemble, the fruit a little sweet and on reduction. The palate provides clear-cut black fruit and moves along with a licorice breeze. The fruit backs off a bit early, post-bottling. The fruit is jaunty, pretty clear. 12.5°. To 2019  Nov 2013

dark robe. Wide shouldered, big bouquet, some intensity and mystery. It is good and ripe, promises to unfurl and reveal well after about one year. The palate has a good rolling black cherry flavour, with lots of gras swirling around. Juicy, enjoyable, has dash and brightness in its fruit, is w.o.w. in the making - when about one year older. Very good Syrah on display, with lots of life, and uplift, good content. Bingo St Jo. It ends on interesting extra note of dust, crushed rocks. It can drink now, but there will be more to it if you wait. Excellent fruit. 12.5°. 2020-21  Nov 2012

2010 ()

(bottling Nov 2011) purple fullness in robe. Live fruit air – the nose is ripe and brisk, a good combo, black cherry and licorice stick together, plus light violet scenting. The palate offers abundant fruit that is very expressive after half way, shows real good final thrust. The attack is oily, the black fruit surges – signs off like a star on stage, arms aloft. w.o.w., very drinkable wine. Its tannins are supple, integrated. A great drop. To 2017. June 2011

2009 ()

½ bottle, bottled Nov 2010: bright red; lightly peppered, licorice, pretty glinting nose, floral airs. Agreeable fruit start to the palate, with a slight mid-palate dip. It runs along steadily. Provides supple drinking, ends crisply. Good and fine black fruit. Accessible style of wine, starts on the up, ends on the up, but dips in between. 13°. To 2015. “It was showing more obviously last week in magnum,” P-J Villa. June 2011
