The Wines

60-70% Grenache, 30-40% Syrah (until mid-2000s was 25% Syrah), both mid-1980s, from clay soils near first outcrops of Dentelles de Montmirail, destemmed, 4 week vinification, twice daily pumping overs, 1-2 part vat emptying/refillings, aged 50% vat, 50% 2-3 year 228-litre oak casks 12 months, unfined, unfiltered, organic wine, 9,000-15,000 b

2017

(oak vat) dark colour; the bouquet has a blackberry lead aroma, blackcurrant and licorice also present in the second tier. It’s a filled opening. The palate moves along with a coasting black fruit, is clear in its delivery, with ripe tannins wrapped around. This drinks serenely, ends on cool blue fruit, elegance there. 13.9°. 9,330 b. 60% Gren, 40% Syr. From 2021. 2034-36 Feb 2020

2012 ()

(vat/casks) dark red; high air to the mulled loganberry fruit aroma, has notes of pine essence and grilled pork present, an inner strength. The palate presents liqueur fruit, high notes once more; it just skips a beat or two along the way, its content in and out after the middle point. Without that, it would exceed 3.5 stars. The finish is more rocky, smoky, mineral and fresh. This has plenty of drive, is genuine. 14.5°. From 2015. 2023-25  Dec 2013

2009

dark, full, thorough robe; has the sun and ripe, fat fruit of 2009 in its nose, also a little spice-pepper seasoning which makes it interesting. The palate is wholehearted, near the limit on its power surge and could be fresher. But it has its own story to tell, certainly covers the ground. Has big, assertive, dark flavouring and is very wide on the late palate. OK now, but decant it. The tannins still attack, and there will be more ease from mid-2013. 14.5°. 2024-26 Feb 2012

2007 ()

dark red, some black tints. Tight, small black fruits nose which continues well, trails some high tone. Juicy fruit start to the palate, which has a nice, rather plump middle. The length is sound. This is very drinkable, a w.o.w. wine that would be good with a variety of dishes. An easy going Vacqueyras with appealing richness. To 2015-17. €15, not that cheap. July 2010

2004 ()

matt tone to the red/black robe. Soft, fragrant black jam bouquet, with some herbs. Good clarity to the palate, with a free fruit expression. A wine that isn’t forced and which floats nicely at the end. Ready now. A little late tannin and licorice. To 2011-13 March 2007
