shiny, inviting dark red robe. The bouquet gives rather brutal reduction, a real “high” pong, with attendant airs of damp dark soil. Blackberrry and licorice sit quietly on the inside. The palate gives an immediate run of black berry fruit with crisp notes, develops a mulberry intensity just before the finish, holding its line OK there. It’s a little disorganised, requires 18 months to move into a greater ensemble. As it stands, it’s functional more than nuanced, is a middle of the road, correct Gigondas. 15°. dark red, full robe; the nose has a mix of herbs and red fruits, hasn’t hit its stride yet, isn’t very open. The palate has a red cherry, kirsch, raspberry flavour, is muskily aromatic, comes with crunch tannins lining the second half. It holds butty content, has depth in the mid-palate. The finish is tight, chewy, smoky, so leave until mid-2020. 14°. Bottled already. 2039-41 Oct 2018

2016 ()

dark red colour. The nose gives a cassis de Dijon aroma, a trail of blackberry, crushed nutshells, is mildly sweet. The palate is close-knit, comes with red fruits and rocky tannins that exert their influence after the mid-point. It’s a little strict, and is a wine that could have been raised longer to better assimilate the tannins that are a touch dry for now. Decant this. From mid-2019. 2029-31 Oct 2017

2015 ()

mild, quite dark red robe. The nose comes forward on clear, accessible, easy red fruits with a dab of floral sweetness. It’s pretty open, without mystery. This is juicy and spicy on the palate, with a wavy roll of dark berry fruit. There is a little take-up of minted, clear tannins as it finishes. This is straightforward, commercial Gigondas for drinking without complication already. There is a little florality on the palate, and a relative finesse on the close, even if it is a bit ephemeral there. It is light wine that lacks stuffing. 14.5°. €21.80 at the cellars. quite dark red. Plum-strawberry, clipped aroma, simply fruited, slight reduction.  The palate holds clear raspberry fruit with zip in its tannins, a light grain powder coming from them. This lacks body, ends with a light note of red fruit. Limited scope and simple, drinks now. 14°. €21.35. 2019-20  Dec 2015


(vat/casks) dark red, purple tints. The nose is aromatic – has a slightly grilled nature, an air of lamb meat stock with sound backing of simmered red fruits. The palate delivers a firm, consistent red cherry fruit, tightens steadily as it ends, gives a firm handshake at the end. It needs to loosen its late tannins, and also has a dry tendency – it starts to dry early, which is a concern. From 2016. £16-18 in GB. 2022-24  Dec 2013

2010 ()

pretty full red robe; black cherry, lively bouquet, comes with smoky bacon, marked cherry a little black tea darkness. The palate starts on a fruit-crunchy tannin combination, builds into a clearer black berry stretch before the tannins resume their chalky tight grip. There is menthol cut on the finish. Upright, breezy wine of free length. From mid-2013. 14°. 2026-28 Dec 2011 Previously July 2011 *** (vat/casks) full up robe; ample load of black cherries rocks out of the nose – all very sunny and inviting. There are laurel and smoke-leather influences behind its sweet, young appeal. There is a wide sweep of black fruit, black liqueur and cherry fruit on the palate, which just contains its power. A modern, fleshy Gigondas – sun more than wind and altitude in its make-up. The length is correct, the fruit continues, shows tar on the aftertaste. A bit one-dimensional, not a real terroir wine. 2009 ()

bright, sound red robe; the nose comes straight out of a Marmite jar – dark, yeast and meat stock roots to it, a salty back note. Rather restrained for a 2009 Gigondas on the palate; sound fruit at its heart, it extends with a polished set of tannins that cluster in an orderly way on the finish. Decent matter here. The aftertaste is of tar and berries. The tannins need leaving for two years. From spring 2013. Not local enough for me. 14°. 2021-23 July 2011

2008 ()

pale, innocuous red. Light, airy red jam, Grenache aroma – strawberry, noting deeper. This is not up to Gigondas standards – it lacks palate depth, is a mild Rhône Villages, mass produced sort of wine (tasted blind). Dry end moments, it drifts on the finish. Not one for the notebook. 14.5°. 2012-13 Dec 2009

2007 ()

full, dark robe; Has a nutty, just bottled air; there is melted honey and lees here in a primary, still raw bouquet – the nose needs nine months to settle. The palate black fruit is infused with a violet or iris scent – shows good heart from half way, and gains as it runs, ending more triumphantly than one would have first thought. There is a sweet little curve at the end. Plenty of lip smacking fruit here, with the finale showing some pebbly tannin. From mid-2009. 14.5°. 2015-16 Nov 2008

2006 ()

bright black cherry colour; there is a sweet air to the bouquet's black fruit – some soaked cherries or griottes here. The palate has wide shoulders – there are soaked fruits here with a fleshy heart. The fruit is a little “high”, rather than fresh. There is a supple core, the length is OK, but the wine is over-extracted, thus one to open and drink rather than air too long. 2013-15 April 2008, London Previously Jan 2008 *** sustained red robe; close-knit stone fruit such as plum on the nose, with some earthy surround. Is quite broad, even if not yet out and about. The palate holds three-quarter richness, but gathers tannins and a dry texture towards the finish. Kicks off with measured red stone fruit – nothing really open as yet. Sound, middle of the road wine that will benefit from some time. From mid-2009. Can improve a little. 14.5°. 2016-18 Jan 2008

2003 ()

dark, minted nose that is pretty full and also shows animal airs. Flesh, good depth on the palate, and its gras holds up pretty much all through. It ends broadly, with some fungal notes there. Good gutsy interior to this. It will be funky around 2007-08. To 2012. July 2005


leather, tangy nose that is supple and broad with toffee to soften it. Round, warm, supple palate – taste of prune jam and red berries here. Nicely elegant, a wine of decent style. 2012-13 July 2005
