50% Grenache (1959, clay with limestone), 50% Syrah (1961, clay, soils 70 cm above mother rock, some limestone) mainly from Les Hauts de Coteaux at 320 metres, 30-45 day concrete vat vinification of varieties apart, twice daily pumping overs at outset, varieties aged apart in 1-year 228-litre oak casks 18 months, the best casks from the Haut des Côtes Vinsobres, unfined, filtered, organic wine, “can live for 15-20 years if well cellared”, 1,600-2,400 b


serene dark red robe, attractive. The bouquet has unfinished business, a typical 2016 welter of ripeness in the fruit, with oak sweetness and smoke attached. It’s a savoury, solid opening. The palate takes an oaked path, with plum fruits that have a little brilliance in them, hence a feel of “up” that helps counter balance the oak. The length is good, and I note the freshness that is well plugged in along the second half. It’s a wine to set aside until 2023, and enjoy in the autumn/winter. dark red; smoky, good bosky airs, pine and nicely oily dark red fruits, pine nuts. It’s just starting out. There is a firm frame around some well measured gras on the palate, which comes through here and there. There is a clear cedar style sign-off. The oaking plays a prominent role for now. Cassis fruits that are dark and smoky lie central to it, with the Syrah more on the fruit, the Grenache more on texture for now, the suavity of ripe, old vine Grenache. “It can keep easily 20 years,” Anaïs Vallot. It needs to advance its gras more towards the finish, so leave until spring 2021. 14.5°. 2033-36 Feb 2019

2004 ()

bouquet - coffee, some chocolate with the black fruit, pepper and leather hang around, too. Mild black fruit, olives and light mintiness, with licorice late on the palate. Has some nerve, is on the go now, indeed advancing. Rather dry finale, suggestion of oak . .? 2011 March 2007


grape skins, nuts and a light smoky topping on bouquet. Nicely southern flavour and feel - olive paste, with a succulent, black cherry feature. Runs on OK, structure is correct. From late 2004, 2005 on. To 2010-11 Dec 2003
