2007

nice purple tints in a clear, quite dark red. There is a light hover of reduction on the nose; there is a good ball of black fruit as the lead aroma with a polished black leather, wee violet, licorice, authentic airs. The palate is led by its black fruit, a little tension in it, a slightly thin wire. Pretty fresh acidity keeps it moving along. It is a tiny bit stretched on the palate – via that tension rather than a more comfortable roundness. Cool, clear, slightly scented finish. This has a good, dentelle – toothsome – quality. 12°. To 2018  March 2013, East Sussex Previously July 2010 *** young, purple colour; tar, black fruits aroma that is more mild than punchy, shows cassis liqueur, crème de cassis, a bit of reduction. Easy, elegant debut to the palate, which carries slightly narrow tannins late on. This is more limited than the 2006. It tightens at the end, shows some acidity there. Day 2: good, regular drinking, the finish has become more rounded. 12°. To 2014. July 2010

2006

nice, bright purple; has a warm, glowing bouquet that expresses creamy, mulled red fruits, some tar. The style is not of granite in the soil – it is warmer than that, and leans more towards southern St Jo than the northern zone thanks to its red fruits that glow in a tight, red cherry way. Good fruit on the attack – round, supple, fills the mouth well. A little tannin snap at the end, the fruit fans out well towards the finish, and it drinks really well now. Has the 2006 vintage mineral in it and is a very faithful, good example of red Saint-Joseph – excellent and slightly spiced, bang on. Has a wonderful middle and second half fruit – tasty, still young, exuberant, STGT wine. 13.5°. 2016-17 July 2010

2002 ()

sound colour. Nose is still rather reduced, some stink, with a floral presence here, too. Sinew in the texture, this is a live, granite wine, the vintage renders it a bit edgy. Fair length. To 2008. Still best to decant it. March 2005 Previously *(*) funky, reduced nose - lot of stink, needs air. Gummy fruit flavour, quite well-knit. Some end acidity. Leave till 2006, decant it, too. 2011-12
