The Wines

80% Grenache (late 1980s), 15% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre from Les Garrigues de Sarrians, part destemmed (machine harvest), part whole bunch (hand harvested), 20-30 day vinification, daily pumping overs, cap punching at the start, then part vat emptying/refilling, lees turned at the end of fermentation, aged large 25 & 35 hl barrel 6-12 months, unfined, filtered, 13-14,000 b


(vat) subdued, quite dark red. Prune, soaked black berries aroma that is accompanied by airs of laurel, tarragon, all pretty authentic. The palate also centres on ripe, long hang time crop – the style is weighty, rather alcoholic, and lacks cut, is stewed. Not easy to drink much of this as it stands, though it may loosen with time. Suited to stews, hearty dishes. The ending is slightly torrid, tarred. From mid-2015. 14.5°. 14,000 b. €6.20. 2021-22 Dec 2013


dark red, black tints. Black cherry, black raisin, near singed nose that comes with cocoa-pine notes, balsamic – this is full of charge. It is a chunky start with good variety coming through. The palate starts on pepper, has a bonny run of gras through it, with charcoal, tarry moments at the end. This has good local appeal, with its tannins requiring two years to meld. An STGT style of wine with lots of garrigue influence in it, one that is well assembled between fruit, quite chunky tannin and relative freshness. Strong wine, not for the faint-hearted. 14.5°. 2023-24. €10 at cellars.  May 2013

2010 ()

rather full red, good sheen. The nose has a thorough grounding, and brings forward images of stones and heat. There is a muscular intensity in its red fruit, has no peripheral airs – it is chunky and single-minded, built around Grenache plum fruit. The palate has a red cherry fruit liqueur flavour, and pronounced tannins that mean a still abrasive late texture. It is oily at heart, rather charged up. The aftertaste brings in thyme and fennel. It is closed after half way, but there is plenty of body within. It could have more flair – is a solid style of wine, not more elevated than that. 14.5°.  2021-22  Sept 2012


full robe, ceding depth at the top. There is a damp air in the black fruit, overt black pepper, some dust and white pepper. Spicy, peppery debut to the palate; the black fruit is grounded, not mobile. This is a big operator. Has local feel, is on the edge of being wild, though. The length is OK. It could possess a bit more stuffing, since it thins out towards the finish. 14.5°. 2016-17 July 2010

2007 ()

quite a dark robe. Brewed, inky bouquet with a core of simmered black fruits and raisin. It persists, provides a good, honest launch pad, represents the Garrigue. The palate is tasty and wide – this is STGT wine with tar and robust features. It ends on the power, not the finesse, has the baked, roasted aspect of its place. There is a hint of late dryness. Post Office red colour. Brewed, warm plateau aroma that is broad. Stylish fruit on the palate, and here is a cohesive 2003. It runs on well with finesse. Holds scented red fruits with discreet tannic support. From 2007, it will offer more varied appeal. It is a touch dry on the finish – but that will not be a menace, I consider. Good style. Drink to 2013. Sept 2005
