attractive, full plum red robe. Roll of mild liqueur red fruit starts the bouquet, touches of honey and raisin also, floral notes – the main influence is primary style strawberry jam air. Attractive, fat and plump appeal on the early and mid-palate. Quiet later stages. Good juice, a sympa wine, is very drinkable now. Upfront, tasty, w.o.w. wine; good with something like cassoulet. “We picked 3 weeks ahead of the 2004, so there is more red fruit in it. Our best Grenache comes when there is a late April or early May ripening, when we can really push the flavour compounds and have flesh in the wine,” Paul Carpenter, winemaker. A$42. 2018-20. thorough red robe. Reductive tendency on the nose – game, earthy airs – which apparently has arrived in bottle. There are discreet floral, blueberry airs, also licorice, in behind. The palate fruit is rich – richer than the 1996 – the flavour mulberry, the texture a tight fabric that works across the palate. Leads into a baked stones aftertaste, garrigue style. Good purity here, it rolls along well, and is more decisive than many current Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Has a serene, elegant run, offers very good Grenache, and ends freshly, too. Decant this. “The best vintage in the last 10 years. At the end of the harvest we thought it lacked concentration (the yields were high), but it has grown and grown,” Paul Carpenter, winemaker. 14.5°. 2019-21 Oct 2009 £83 for 6 www.everywine.co.uk

good robe, no tile in its red. Peppered, snappy aroma, fine airs – its alcohol is just peeping out, has a dusty air that is OK. Direct, upright style palate, clear and tangy. The air brings a shade more body – plum fruit, cinnamon. This has a subtlety about it, and would shock lovers of sweetness, or those now conditioned to sweet-influenced wines. Lovely with veal or pork. After 30 minutes – shows more evolution, Indian tea, boot polish. 14°. 2016-18 Oct 2009
