The Wines

from old Viognier on granite, mica-schist soils at perfect south facing slope of Coteau de Chéry at Condrieu, whole bunch pressing, oak cask fermented at 17°C, wild yeasts, raied 600-litre oak casks 8 months, then vat 2 months, first vintage 2010, broad bottle

2016 ()

shiny, attractive yellow. There’s a restrained elegance on the nose, a bonny, even display of peach, nectarine. It has great purity and clarity. The palate expresses pear fruits, has a winning freshness, is a finely stylish Condrieu with subtle qualities. There’s a little build in depth towards its good, circular finish. This is a real pleasure to drink solo, even if Chéry can give more rolling richness and fat. It’s a finely tuned Condrieu with good balance, great poise. 2023-24 Feb 2018

2013 ()

yellow robe, green tints. The nose gives citrus airs, along with pear, banana, flan, a spiced greengage and oak toasting. The palate is almost spritzy, has a CO2 insertion, is round, fat at its core. This is a bit cobbled together rather than truly coherent. It ends with some freshness, an orange marmalade tang - a quietly solid note, a couch of fruit tart pastry there. The oak is prominent. Leave until late 2015. Decant it. 14°. 2020-22  Jan 2015

2011 ()

(casks) yellow colour, quite thick robe. Wide, well-filled aroma – the bouquet shows ripe fruit, latent power. 1) it needs time, 2) it needs food such as pork, veal, lobster. It has honey at its heart, and almost an air of petrol. The palate has a rich and compact start, with close walls of textured, solid gas to fence it in. Its shape is rectangular, thus. It will loosen its stays from late 2014 – gradually. For now, the flavour is caramel, brioche and all tight-knit. It just keeps is ripe power within limits. A masculine, grounded Condrieu. Broad, profound, has good acidity, needs time – do not touch for now. 2024-26  Nov 2012

2010

(casks) bright yellow; creamy, almost agreeable flan-custard nose with nice milky appeal, wee spot of clarity and a mineral float. The palate commences with fat, but its fruit is expressive, has good granular qualities, really precise. Mixing fat with a mineral sprinkle is very Chéry in style and flavour. Its abundance is shapely, elegant. Rocking good Condrieu that shows oak on the finish, on the outside of the wine today. Very terroir until the oak comes through. From late 2012. 2020-22 July 2011
