The Wines

100% Syrah, from Leyat, La Viallière, La Brosse, Le Champin, (Brune-northern sector) and Semons (southern sector) (av age 25 years), destemmed, crushed crop, 20-day vinification at 28°C, aged new-1 year 275-litre casks 15-18 months after malo in those casks

2017 ()

(275-litre casks) dark robe; the nose has a chocolate strength from its prominent oak, an inner of dark black berry fruit, is rather unyielding. There’s a hint of the south in its black raisin. The palate has oaking running through it, the mix of red and black berries showing here and there. The aftertaste is almost pure oak, so very dry. It narrows down along the palate due to that oak, which unbalances it. 100% Syrah. From 2022-23. 2035-37 Dec 2018

2016 ()

(casks) dark red robe, magenta top. The nose is lucid, has a smoky-oak layer above black fruit that shows style, has a discreet intensity. There is a notion of flowers, violets. The palate arrives with a tasty centre of blueberries, blackberries, has streamlined tannins, with oak apparent, a toffee note from that, on the finish. This is a pleasant Rôtie, a good, safe bet to accompany beef dishes, for example. The length is sound. From mid-2019. 2032-34 Nov 2017

2015 ()

(casks) shiny dark red robe. The nose is broad, just starting to peek out; there is a black cherry refinement, with clear, deft oaking, and a mineral tang. The palate delivers stylish black fruits with a good wheel of tannin and oak around the outside. The finish is clear, the length secure. The juice is tasty and free, so there is much to look forward to. It’s a polished performer. From mid-2019 to allow oak fusion. 2036-38 Oct 2016

2007 ()

(casks) full, bright black cherry robe; there are “dark” aromas here – charcoal, dark chocolate, a snap of raisin – has a firm, grounded style, and is a wee bit vegetal. On the palate it reveals itself to be a foot down on the pedal wine: there is forward black fruit with a wrapping of matter, tannin, oak. Some late gras just about entwines with the oak. A sturdy, cellar-influenced wine more than a child of the vineyard. A close run thing as to whether it has enough matter for its oaking. From late 2010. 2023-25 Dec 2008

2006 ()

(casks) mild, quite full red colour; red fruits nose with some briskness and snap, has core and suggests sound potential. It shows plum fruit, a little spice and animal tones. Cassis, black berry fruits on the palate, with an assured depth and roundness. It runs in sequence, the tannins grow and are surrounded by some late oak. Has quite a crisp aftertaste. Cleanly made wine with good flow. From 2010 to allow more oak absorption. 2024-26 Nov 2007

2005

(cask samples) sound red robe; reserved, simply defined, rounded jam aroma of red berries. The palate is also flattering, with some decent packing and a consistent depth. There is a little tar within a springy black jam, scented flavour. The live tannins add some character, and are ripe. Length is sound – the tannins need a little time. From 2008 late. 2023-25 Nov 2006
