70% Grenache (1960s), 20% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault from clay-limestone, alluvial, small galet covered soils at Roquemaure, destemmed, 20-28 day vinification, daily pumping overs, part vat emptying/refillings, 50% steel vat, 50% concrete vat raised 10-12 months (before mid-2010s aged 30% 600-litre oak casks, 70% large 40 hl barrels 10-12 months), filtered, called Chapelle de Maillac until early 2010s, 18,000 b

2016 ()

red robe. Has a dark berry fruit air, a nugget of raspberry with nuttiness, inner depth. The palate travels freely on red berries, raspberry, has a fresh line of tannin. There is an enjoyable savoury mid-palate which distinguishes it. The finish is more tenacious, mildly chunky, can ease further. There is good fruit persistence here. It favours refinement over mass. 14.5°. From 2018. 2023-24 Sept 2017

2015 ()

dark red colour. The nose is based on a sturdy aroma of stewed, sweet-noted fruits, raspberry. It bears southern warmth, prune style airs also. The palate repeats the nose – this hums with implicit power, strength, bulks up as it finishes, reveals its 15° in a robust finish. This is a big, grounded wine for stews, even game. The finish is dense, compact. It’s a solid, countryman’s wine. From 2018 to allow more loose, open expression. 14.5°. 2023-24 June 2017

2014 ()

quite a pale red robe. Reduction lurks on the nose, sweet herbs, a flattering cooked red berry aroma. The palate gives simple red fruits with a low-key take-up of tannin. The finish gives a toffee roundness. This is simple, skimming Lirac, very modern and inoffensive. 14°. 2020-21 June 2016 Previously Feb 2016 ** fair red robe. The bouquet is brewed up, shows reduction, damp soil, could be clearer. This is simple – the palate bears red berry fruit, a light strawberry, but is unconvincing after half way, the second half positioned on spice and slightly dry tannins, the aftertaste arid. It has been hit by the vintage, is a workmanlike Lirac that requires stews, for example, to help conceal its Spartan body. 14.5°. 2018-19  Feb 2016 

2013

mild red robe; fruit gum, black berry aroma – the bouquet has an appealing sweetness, gives notes of licorice and raspberry. The attack is fluid, holds easy to appreciate fruit – a raspberry and plum mix glides along without undue tannic interference, shows just a little bite from the tannins as it ends. This is undemanding, a lightweight wine in comparison to a great year such as 2010, but it does have its own compact balance and early appeal. This shape is curvy – this is very drinkable with sausages, grills, oxtail soup. The fruit develops a blackberry nature that is clear and facile, comes with a wee note of thyme as it closes. 2011 ()

dark red. Reductive, quite clean black fruit aroma which has a sweet, local style and a meatiness in with its herbs – there is meaningful depth to the bouquet. The palate is also on reduction, but has solid quality, is an “efficient” wine. Its black fruit has style, but the main impression on the second half is one of its tannins closing it down. Plenty in the glass, abundance present here, The grain-dust, fine rocky exit is authentic. The fruit is juicy most of the way. 2010 ()

fair red robe. The nose has an inky, tea darkness, with prune and ripe berry present, black raisins and herbs such as rosemary. The palate holds sweet-noted red fruit, ripe raspberry running through it. Fine grain tannins spice it near the finish. A wine with character, which is not forced or cluttered. Agreeable for autumn, winter drinking. 14.5°. To 2018. Sept 2012

2008

matt plum colour. The nose is already showing tea, secondary airs – the robe had indicated this possibility. It shows rather droopy almost rotted strawberry fruit, animal notes also. There are gamey notes in the cassis and loganberry fruit on the palate. It ends on minted area. It is drinking OK now, is a wine suited to stews, for instance. Modest wine that is not that clean. 13.5°. 2013-14  Dec 2009

2005

red, with black traces. The aroma bears a rounded black fruits aroma – but there is a lack of acidity or verve, and this would not do well if served too warm. The palate fruit gushes, but is a bit flat, like the nose: there is a lack of cut, it is all sealed up. Rather one-dimensional. Now to 2010-11. June 2007

2004

bright, full red colour. Bouquet shows potential - is broad, and intrinsically full - southern-toned with herbal scents. Measured, orderly palate, has its tannic outcrop, but also a good red fruit content, and the zappy Syrah fruit peps it up. Herbs again on aftertaste. Drinks fine early now. 2014-16 I always find their Lirac very consistent, good value. September 2005, London
