65-70% Grenache, 10-15% Mourvèdre, 10-15% Syrah, 5-10% Cinsault from stony, alluvial soils on 6 hectares at 250-300 metres, crushed, destemmed, cool maceration, then 2 week fermentation, wild yeasts, 2 daily cap punchings, aged 60-90% vat, 10-40% 2-4 year 300 & 550-litre oak casks 8-9 months (until early 2010s was 15-18 months), unfined, unfiltered, 30-45,000 b

2016 ()

shiny, bold red colour. The bouquet is exuberant, cherries, toffee, licorice in the mix, vanilla pod also. It rests on its fruit, without special local feel for now. The palate is streamlined, bears wavy black Morello cherry fruits with flexible tannins. It’s comes all in roundness, is a bit flashy, glossy. There is a build in intensity and tannic assertion towards the finish. Another six months’ raising would have been fine for it. It can be drunk now, but only on its slightly one-dimensional first youth. From late 2018, really. 14°. 40,000 b. 2026-28 Oct 2017

2015

attractive, pretty dark red robe. The nose reveals bonny black berry fruits, blueberry, cassis and blackberry in an appealing mix. There are some floral notes, too. The palate attacks well on supple black fruits with good juice in the content, picks up a little fresh tannin and drive. This is a well made, pretty genuine Gigondas with some perfumed sweetness at its heart. 13.5°. 40,000 b. €16.30. From late 2017. 2027-29 March 2017

2014

red robe, a little purple. Sweet herbs mix with slightly liqueur style raspberry fruit on the nose. It has a local nature, is a soft start. The palate delivers red berry fruits with a smoky thread, ends crisply, a minted tang and pepper on the close. It is a little of a drifter, but drinks pretty easily. 13.5°. 40,000 b. 70% Gren, 10% Syr, 10% Mourv, 10% Cins. 70% vat raised. €16.20. From spring 2016. 2021-22  Dec 2015

2013 ()

dark robe. Has a sturdy, chocolate-bearing nose with a black raisin depth and a small hum of flowers. The palate is chunky on the attack, holds sustained content, quite an immobile mass of it. It retains a cool note on the finish, and is more fine there. A solid, young Gigondas. From 2017. 2027-28  Apr 2015 Previously Dec 2014 *** purple colour. Briary red and dark berry fruit airs show on the nose. These are reciprocated on the palate. There is a slight herbaceous note, and the mid-palate is a touch fluid. The tannins are chewy and dry on the finish. 14°. 45,000 b. €16. Bottled Sept 2014. Drink from end 2015. 2020-21. JL  Dec 2014

2012 ()

very dark; has an ample, solid, well-furnished nose that offers black cherry, violet, black coffee. Has good style, width and nice freedom. The palate fruit has life in it, some freshness, acidity and cut in it. This holds crisp, towards blueberry fruiting and a light covering of pepper, coffee grain and cocoa. The finish is prolonged, butty, with late glow – it keeps trucking. Has a beef stock, oaked depth. From 2015. Bottled 9 Sept 2013, 30,000 b, 70% Gren, 10% each Syr, Mourv, Cins, €15 at the cellars. 90% vat raised. 2022-24  Dec 2013

2011

good, quite full red colour. The first aroma is black cherry, with a small roll of smoke behind – the nose shows balance and the potential to vary, has a light black raisin depth. The palate hands out easy, tasty black cherry fruit with sleek tannins attached. It drinks freely now, without complications. Agreeable, if one-dimensional. The fruit fades a little on the finish for now, but that may be due to recent bottling. 14°. 70% Gren, 10% Mourv, 10% Syr, 10% Cins, 45,000 b, €15 at the cellars this year. 2019-20  Dec 2012

2010 ()

dark, shiny robe; crunchy black fruit-blackberry air, reflects black olives, damp black soil, has a good, southern curve of welcome, licorice also – a good start. Savoury, smoky black fruits, prune on the palate. Tannins block the fruit after half way, are compact, ripe. This has good drive and lift. There is an enjoyable small ball of blackberry on the aftertaste. From mid-2013. 14°. 2028-30 Dec 2011

2008 ()

slightly dark, also bright robe; raspberry, blackberry airs here damp leaves, earth, dark soil underneath, fundamental influences. The palate leads with knotted black fruit, all inset on itself, chewy and leathery outside its prune, black fruit. Oak emerges right at the end. The fruit tones down on the finish, but it can handle its oaking. From mid-2011. 2019-20 Dec 2009

2007

dark robe. Reticent nose that is intrinsically powerful, so Christmas cake, polished leather, light cocoa airs enter the equation – this does not convey fresh fruit. Tighty knit black fruit shows on the palate, with a close implant of oak, a close wrapping, a wine not open to the world. The fruit is direct, pretty lucid, and there is plenty of matter, tannin and oak all around it. Oak rules for now, so leave until mid-2012 plus. It can certainly run on over time. 2023-24 Dec 2009 Previously Nov 2008 **** (vat/casks) bright, full black and purple robe; there is stylish fruit within the bouquet – blackberry with some sweetness and a little smoky tannin – it is pretty and clear, and beefy. There is a blackberry flavour debut to the palate, with three-quarter weight filling and chewy matter behind. Is enclosed and wrapped up for now, but promises well – has a good range of fruit, tannin, freshness, and length. There are pockets of herb and bacon in the late flavour. Good, nicely proportioned and muscular wine. 14°. 2016-18 Nov 2008

2006 ()

dark, black colour. Something of a wall of sleekly styled black fruit fronts up the bouquet – blackberry liqueur, for instance: it is in a first stage, primary state, not varied, the fruit left to hang on the vine. The palate bears blackberry fruit that gains in bite, leading to a prune-leathery final stage. Modern, clean winemaking here, a spotless wine for now, but has that final chew and depth that can render it more interesting in the future. 2005

deep, blackberry robe; there is a restrained sweetness in the black jam aroma – this bouquet murmurs a sweet tune, but also has some late snap, crackle. The palate swims in some rounded fruit – the texture is fleshy, forward but the wine is not precisely defined. Beyond the fruit are bacon, roast pig, toasted elements. It tightens a little towards the finish. A modern, down the line wine. The air tightens it, brings out a more pebbly nature. More interesting once more mature, say around 2011-14. 14°. 2016-18 Sept 2008, Boston

2004

quite dark and bright robe; has a nutty, primary red fruits aroma – compact, clean and ripe at their core. The red fruits on the palate possess a sound, even texture, and it grips well at the fresh end. There is nice continuity along the palate. Quietly classy wine of good potential. 2016-17 Dec 2006

2003

dark robe; nutty, broad bouquet with baked fruit and soaked olives – a southern affair alright. Full, obvious, touch rustic in style on the palate. Has a soaked fruit, sweet interior with prune and violet on the end. Tannins are inset, but I can't envisage a great flowering for this, since its balance is not assured. From 2007 on, though it may settle a little. 2013-14 July 2005
